TONYELA: The Journey

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

The journey to 'TONYELA' began in 2024, when MasterPiece entered the recording process with the vision of creating a project unlike anything she had released before. Engineering challenges ultimately derailed the initial sessions, but the interruption became part of the creative process. In the time that followed, MasterPiece continued to write, live, grow, and transform her experiences into art.

That evolution became the foundation of recording 'TONYELA'.

A GENRE-DEFYING BODY OF WORK

'TONYELA' exists at the intersection of hip hop, R&B, pop rock, gospel, and spoken-word poetry, creating a sound and experience that is difficult to place in a single category and impossible to experience without feeling something.

For years, MasterPiece has teetered on the line between lyricist and poet, seamlessly blending the cadence, rhythm, and cultural language of hip hop with the vulnerability and depth of poetry. With TONYELA, she pushes that boundary even further, introducing listeners to what she calls her own genre of poetry.

The album is a collection of both new poems and songs shaped by lived experience, reflection, resilience, love, pain, spirituality, and personal evolution. Rather than simply telling stories, TONYELA invites listeners to feel them while opening their minds to a different understanding of what poetry, music, and spoken word can become when they occupy the same space.

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

In collaboration with producer and engineer Ishmael Moody, MasterPiece returned to the studio and crafted what has become an expansive and timeless body of work. Together, they shaped an album that allows poetry to live inside multiple musical worlds without losing its identity.

'TONYELA' features an accomplished collection of artists, including Obbie West, Red January, Chris Traylor, MAC Woods, Lyrik Hunter, MandiE, and MasterPiece's own son, Sikali.

The result is an album that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable; a project rooted in MasterPiece's lived experience while reaching toward something larger.

LISTENING PARTY RECAP

FROM THE ARTIST

“TONYELA is more than an album,” MasterPiece says. “It is an evolution of how I understand myself as a poet, an artist, and a woman. Every poem, every song, every sound carries a piece of the journey.”

With TONYELA, MasterPiece is not simply returning after nearly a decade between full-length projects. She is introducing a new chapter.

TONYELA is MasterPiece at her most honest, most intentional, and most mature her best work to date.
